12. Baron von Würtzburg
The Bavarian Baron Philipp Hartmann Veit von Würtzburg (1811-1897), almost the same age as King Otto, served as an officer in the Greek cavalry and equerry (hipparchos) to the King.
During the royal couple’s exile in Bamberg he served in the period 1864-66 as chamberlain of the Court of H.M. Queen Amalia.
He appears in the dark green uniform of the Greek cavalry – which was adopted from the Bavarian lancers of the light cavalry – which bears the crowned monogram of King Otto (O) on a silver badge of his cap.
He had married in 1839 in Athens, Greece, Anne Teresa Lyons (1815-1894), daughter of the British ambassador in Athens, Admiral Sir Edmud Lyons (1790-1858), 1st Baron Lyons.
He had married in 1839 in Athens, Greece, Anne Teresa Lyons (1815-1894), daughter of the British ambassador in Athens, Admiral Sir Edmud Lyons (1790-1858), 1st Baron Lyons, and Augusta Louisa Lyons (née Rogers).
Their son Baron Ludwig Veit von Würtzburg (1845-1922), who was born in Athens and later, as a lieutenant colonel in the Bavarian 4th Cavalry Regiment, served as a royal chamberlain to the Greek Royal Court at Bamberg Palace. He married in Bamberg Cathedral (8 March 1873) the maid of honour of Queen Amalia, Regina Filonos (1855-1919), her family originating from Livadia, being the daughter of the last president of the Parliament before the expulsion of Otto, Filon Filonos, who in 1862 followed the deposed Otto and Amalia to Bavaria.
His exact portrait derives from two sources: a) the oil painting with the full-length portrait of the baron with Bavarian and Greek soldiers in the background, by the Württemberg painter of war scenes and panoramas Louis (Ludwig) Braun (1836-1916) and b) from the colored lithograph by Wilhelm Gustav Kraus depicting him as a member of Otto's mounted retinue.
